For more than hundred years, the Municipal Administrations of the City of Diekirch and Ettelbruck have supplied the households in their cities with electrical energy. The transposition of various European directives liberalising the electric power market and the national law of August 1, 2007 relating to the organisation of the electricity market, led the Municipal Administrations to carry out modifications as for the electricity supply of their citizens. From the 1st April 2008, these changes apply.
The cities of Diekirch and Ettelbruck remain the owners and managers of their network infrastructure, including the installation and maintenance of electric lines and cables, transformers and meters, the reading of which will continue to be carried out by the municipal industrial services.
To ensure the supply of electricity to their citizens in the future, on the 14th March 2008, the cities of Ettelbruck and Diekirch as well as the Luxembourg supplier Cegedel formed the public limited company NordEnergie, owned in equal parts by the three shareholders.
The goal of NordEnergie is mainly the supply of electric energy to customers within the networks of the Cities of Ettelbruck and Diekirch, from the 1st April 2008. NordEnergie will also offer complementary offers and services such as nova naturstroum green electricity and energy advice for citizens.
This new structure will enable the three players namely the City of Diekirch, the City of Ettelbruck as well as Enovos Luxembourg to face the challenges of a fully open electricity and gas market, retaining essential synergies in the interest of controlling costs while respecting the independence criteria required by the European directive, without neglecting to provide flawless and local service at competitive prices to customers in both cities .
